After a report of two dogs tethered to utility poles on a dead end street in Pompano, Florida, officer Angela Laurella was called. Because there were no cameras nearby, nobody knew how long the dogs had been there or who had left them. In contrast, Officer Laurella understood that there was no time to waste because the ambient temperature was over 100 degrees.
She hurried over to find a frail gray dog who was gripping a pole so tightly he could hardly move. He had a very short leash when he was chained to a pole, according to Amy Roman, president and founder of 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida, who told The Dodo. His bones and ribs were all visible, and he was severely underweight and dehydrated.
The dog, who was now given the name Liam, dropped his head and put his paw in the officer’s hand to accept pets. He kind of cowered and extended his paw to her as if to say, “Please help me get out of here,” according to Roman. “She just walked slowly toward him and reached out her hand,” he added.
Officer Laurella approached the rescue 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida for help after determining that Liam had not led a simple life and needed special attention. Roman took Liam with no hesitation, even if the rescue was overcrowded.
After several visits to the veterinarian, Liam is now resting in Roman’s home, where the 17-pound pocket bulldog is gradually regaining strength and consuming healthier food than in the past.
Roman added, “He always receives so much love. He receives food at the stroke of twelve, so his body becomes used to it. We have volunteers making batches of boiling chicken and rice, so he’s having a great time right now.
Liam has come a long way since his rescue, but he still has a long way to go, including several vet visits.
This dog doesn’t have a mean bone in his body, and he loves everyone, according to Roman. That says it everything, in my opinion, that he’s still so appreciative and forgiving despite everything he’s been through. In Florida, Liam is just one of several animals whose owners recently gave them up for adoption or surrender.
Roman hopes pet owners will turn to shelters and rescues for help and services before concluding they can no longer care for their pets because so many shelters are already at capacity. And Liam is a perfect example of the notion that every dog merits another opportunity.
Despite everything, Liam keeps trying to connect with people, demonstrating that he is prepared for a life with a caring family. Canines like Liam, in my opinion, have much to teach humanity, ” said Roman. Only your faith is restored, she said.
